11. BS EN 789 : 1996 Timber Structures – Test Methods
- Determination of mechanical properties of wood-based panels.
(This standard is new work and, therefore, does not supersede any existing
British Standard)
The standard describes tests specifically designed for determining
the mechanical properties of wood-based panels used in load-bearing timber
structures. These properties are intended for the calculation of characteristic
values according to BS EN 1058 : 1996 Wood-based panels – Determination
of characteristic values of mechanical properties and density. These
characteristic values are used in obtaining the design values for plywood
applications in timber structures designed to Eurocode 5. Also, changes
appearing in BS 5268-2 : 2002 Structural use of timber – Code of Practice
for permissible stress design, materials and workmanship will reference
BS EN 789 and BS EN 1058 for some plywood types acceptable for load-bearing
applications in the United Kingdom. Characteristic values determined
under BS EN 1058 will have to be converted to permissible stress values
as directed in BS 5268-2.
