Veneer Grades

A

Smooth, sanded, paintable surface. Up to 18 neatly made repairs permitted, all must be parallel to the grain. May be used for natural finish (clear sealer type) in less demanding applications. Synthetic repairs permitted.

B

Solid, sanded surface. Shims, circular repair plugs and tight knots to 25 mm (1 in.) across the grain permitted. Some minor splits to 0.75 mm (1/32 in.) permitted. Synthetic repairs permitted.

C

Improved C veneer with splits limited to 3 mm (1/8 in.) width and knotholes and borer holes limited to 6mm (1/4 in.) x 12.5 mm (1/2 in.). Admits some broken grain due to sanding defects or loose fibres, but fractures not allowed. Synthetic repairs permitted. Touch-sanded for sizing.

C

Tight knots to 37.5 mm (1-1/2 in.). Knotholes to 25 mm (1 in.) across grain and some to 37.5 mm (1-1/2 in.). Synthetic or wood repairs. Discolouration and sanding defects that do not impair strength permitted. Limited splits allowed, stitching permitted. C-grade veneer minimum permitted for Exterior panels.

D

Knots and knotholes to 62.5 mm (2-1/2 in.) width across grain and 12.5 mm (1/2 in.) larger within specific limits. Limited splits permitted. Stitching permitted. Use of D-grade veneer limited to Exposure 1 panels.
